Vavulmala is one of the noted hills stations in kerala located at the border of malappuram kozhikode border in malappuram district. the hill station is located along with western ghats in vellarimala forest ranges. this is the highest peak in kozhikode and have height of 2399 meter. the vavulmala locally known as vavulmala which means the hill of bats. it is separated nilgiri from small stretch of deccan plateau. vavul mala is one of the rare hill station in north kerala is typical place for trekking. it also referred as one of the highest climbing station in south india. the trekking to the hill top is the main tourist activity offered here.
The trekking start from at the foot of vavulmala, it reach at the destination by passing through vellarimala, swargamkunnu, olichuchattam, marippuzha, muthappanpuzha. the trekking is allowed only by the permission of the forest department. most of this forest is maintained by the meppadi forest range of south wayanad division. you can see a beautiful waterfall on the way after the fourty five minutes of trekking. olichuchattam waterfalls is a less known waterfall in kozhikode. this narrow waterfall is cascading down trough the heavy rocks, but the water level become very high during the monsoon season.
Kethan para is the surprise hill top at the final stage of your trekking, it is very comfortable hill top to view the surroundings very well especially the masthakappara which is a slope like rock. post monsoon season is the best time to visit the vavulmala. if you travel 26 km from the destination you can easily reach at the nearest railway station at nilmabur by rickshaws or by private bus services. nilmabur is easily connects to shornur. calicut international airport is 40 km away from the destination.
