Peechi vazhani wild life sanctuary is the second oldest wild life sanctuary in kerala which established in 1958 in thrissur district. the sanctuary covers an area about 125 km sq, is an extension of nellyambathy and pallappalli forest forest ranges and is shares with the northern border chimmini wild life sanctuary. the evergreen rain forests and semi evergreen rain forests are the behind the beauty of the sanctuary, there are more than 50 variety of orchids, huge trees and medicinal plants very much. a lot flaura and fauna is the main feature of the sanctuary. the animals includes in the sanctuary are the sambar deer, spotted deer, asian elephant, barking deer, jungle dog, sloth bear,leopard etc.
This is the highest peak in ponmudi which is 900 meter above from the sea level. trekking is the adventurous activity exhibited here,which is very interesting and have the new experience inside the sanctuary. the trekking activities are arranged by the tourism department of kerala and they also well preserve the sanctuary. the boating is also possible in the lake which formed along with peechi vazhani dams. peechi vazhani wildlife sanctuary preserved as the best tourist spot to have the enjoyment not only in boating but also for trekking
peechi vazhani wild life sanctuary is 23 km away from thrissur town and peechi village is the door to entering into the sanctuary. the sanctuary is located east to thrissur in the catchment area of peechi and vazhani dams. october to march is the best time to visit. mannuthy and thrissur are the nearest towns located at the distances of 16 and 21 kms respectively. there are many bus services offers from thrissur north stand and the thrissur railway station is 22 km away. cochin international airport is the closest airport at a distance of 61 km.
