Palakkad fort is one of the ancient fort preserved in kerala by the archaeological department, located at palakkad, the history of the fort in ancient days is unknown, but he fort was rebuilt by hyder ali in 1766. hyder ali is the father of tipu sultan, during the period of tipu he captured the fort, palakkad fort is also known as tipu’s fort. it is protected as a monument by the archaeological survey of india. the strongest literate walls are the highlight of the palakkad fort, it believed that the stones collected from the near by places of kerala, the architecture style of the fort shows some resembles with the fort in north kerala.
The history of colonial age in kerala says that the fort captured by British in 1784, but the war with samoothiris was a cause of lost the fort, but the British recaptured the palakkad fort in 1790, but the fort got the name of tipu after his death. inside the fort it consisits of a kotta mandiram is a huge ground, or the fort ground, it situated in between the fort and palakkad town hall. during the period of tipu this place was the stable for elephants and horses for his martial purposes. now it is used for conducting the public functions.
The fort is square in structure surrounded with the walls, the solid bridge of the fort focused at the entrance. a hanuman temple is situated here as a part of palakkad fort.
