Muthanga wildlife sanctuary, project elephant and wild animals
Muthanga wildlife sanctuary is one of the center in kerala for preserving the wild animals in kerala, spread over an area of 345 sq km. it was established in 1973. muthanga wildlife sanctuary also known as wayanad wildlife sanctuary. this sanctuary is well connect to some regions of tamil nadu and karnataka, the rain forest of wayanad sanctuary connect to bandipur at karnataka and madumalai of tamil naadu and hence it says that wayand sanctuary maintain the relationship with other states. the sanctuary is famous for project elephant in kerala. actually project elephant in india established in india 1992, and declared elephant as national heritage animal in 2010. this is one of the sanctuary listed under project elephant plan.
Muthanga wildlife sanctuary is rich with a lot of flaura and fauna. variety of plants, trees,herbs and tropical forest. the sanctuary consists of four forest ranges, they are sultan bathery, kurchyad, muthanga and tholpetty. the tea plantations are separating these ranges of forests. the elephant camp is a main attraction because the sanctuary give primary priority to elephants, other animals found in the sanctuary are tiger, panthers, jungke cats, wild dogs, monkeys, civets etc. some of the beautiful birds and rare birds can be seen in the sanctuary.
The entry fee for the sanctuary is 10 for a single person but a foreigner pay 100 rupee for the entry, it opens for the visitors daily. The sanctuary is the part of nilgiri biosphere reserve in western ghats. Moist deciduous forest consists of rosewood, maruthi, , venteak, vengal, mazhukanjiram, , bamboos, more, while the semi-evergreen patches comprises veteria indica, lagerstroemia, lanceolata, termianalia paniculata etc. There is not a railway station at wayanad, the nearest railway station is at kozhikode and calicut international airport is the nearest air way to locate to the destination.
