Mangalavanam bird sanctuary – lungs of cochi
Mangalavanm bird sanctuary is a popular bird sanctuary located at the peaceful site of cochi in ernakulam distrit, mangalavanam bird sanctuary is known as the lungs of cochin, there is too many birds here which is well preserved in the sanctuary. it sprawling an area of 2.74 hectares. the presence of migratory birds are too much in this area. there is a watch tower to observe the migratory birds and also other birds.
the sanctuary is situated adjacent to the building of high court of kerala. there is a tidal lake which connect to the backwaters of cochi through a canal. Avicennia officinalis, Rhizophora mucronata, Acanthus ilicifolius and Acrostichum aureum are the mangrove associate with the mangalavanam bird sanctuary. there is not only preserve the birds but also the fishes, mammals and amphibians. mangalavanm is a hot spot to preserve the vegetation and species, unfortunately the pollution and other environmental problems are affect the stability and the arrival of migratory birds.
mangalavanam is a protective area which is declared as in 2004, it very helpful spots for the students and the people who are interested with bird watching. kerala forest departments arranges the annual camp every year at this spot. it is ecologically sensitive area. some of the birds include the sanctuary are brhminy kite, common greenshank, common redshank, marsh sandpiper and white-breasted waterhen etc.
Mid january to early march is the best time to visit the sanctuary, it will open for the visitors daily from 9 am to 6 pm. kochi is one of the major city in kerala, so it can be easily access at the destination. ernakulam junction is the nearest city, which provides both KSRTC and rail services to other cities, cochin internaional airport is the nearest airport.
