Kurinjimala sanctuary is the only sanctuary in kerala which known by the name of a plant in kerala, neelakurinji plants are the secret behind the name of this sanctuary, which is sprawling an area of 32 sq km. strobilanthus kunthiyana is the scientific name of neelakurinji, these flowers are the unique flowering plants that blooming only after the break of 12 year. there are many peoples reach here to enjoy the beauty of the hills and the blooming of neelakurinji sometimes. the sanctuary includes elephant, deer, nilgiri tahr, nilgiri wood pegion, grizzled giant squirrel, sambar deer etc. north border of the sanctuary is shares with chinnar wild life sanctuary along with amaravathy forest ranges. anamudi shola and pampadum shola shares the borders south and west respectively.
The forest region of kurinjimala is declared as sanctuary in 7 october 2006, by the former forest minister benoy viswam during the ceremony of neelakurinji fest in 2006. was to preserve the neelakurinji flowers in primary faceia. trekking and the raveling are the main tourist attraction in the sanctuary. the forest department arranges the trekking to the top in association with the tribes. kurinjimala sanctuary lies in kottakamboor and kumily villages of devikulam taluk in idukki district.
The best time to visit the sanctuary is on october, because the tourism department arranges neelakurinji fest every year in october, this is optional. the nearest bus stands are mattuppetty and munnar which are located at a distances of 8 and 13 km respectively. the nearest railway stations are kochi and kottayam. kochi located at distance of 142 km and kottayam in 150 km. cochin international airport is the nearest airport 130 km away from the destination.if you plan a trip to kurinjimala don’t the near places of kurinjimala which include chinnar, eravikulam, pambadum shola etc.
