Idukki dam is a world famous dam located in kerala and also the first arch dam in Asia, the dam situated between two granite hills named kuravan and kurathi hills. idukki dam is a main hydroelectric power project in kerala and the main source of serving electricity all over the state. it has 750 mw ability to produce electricity, idukki dam is built in 1975 by the kerala state electricity board and the dam built by the help of Canada. The dam was commissioned by Indira gandhi in 1973. The dam is situated over periyar river, this river is the largest river in kerala and greater hydro electric projects present along with this river.
Moolamatttam is the first underground hydroelectric project in kerala, which is the part of this dam, chemthuruni and kulamkavu dams are the neighboring dams of idukki which forming an artificial lake, this stored water is used to moolamattam which stored in rocky caves. This is the third highest dam in india. The dam has an approximate height 169 meter. here is a very calm and cool climate. boating is the main attraction at this valley, the voyage start from kulamkavu and ends in chenthuruni, when you try the boating once you can experience the beauty of idukki. There is a hill point view to see its beauty from top, this peak situated 350 feet from the water level.
The dam is open for public daily 9 to 5, the best time ti visit the dam is september to may, the climate and refreshment from this place is will not achieve from any other places in kerala. The nearest railways stations are idukki and ernakulam located at a distance of 125 and 120 km respectively. if you reach at the valley the jeep service is available to reach at the destination. cochin international airport situated 93 km from idukki.
