kerala folklore museum is located at thevara in ernakulam, this is a three storied building which exhibits folklore wealth of the state, such kind of museum in kerala is very rare. we can undoubtedly says that it is the heritage treasure of kerala, which established in 2009, it is not a profit aimed museum. it exhibits the costumes of Kerala folk art forms, mask,sculptures, musical instruments, jewellery, equipment used in stone age, medicinal astrological secrets, costumes of traditional art forms etc, which are preserved here in with maximum care and it reveals a great way to study about the culture and art of Kerala in old days. it definitely give an opportunity to study the heritage of state especially for new generations.
The architecture of kerala folklore museum building is extremely follows a kerala style architecture, three floors of the building shows three variety things, in first floor it shows the costume of traditional art forms like theyyam, ottanthullal, kathakali etc, this floor is commonly known as kalithattu, the second floor give the amazing vision of mural paintings which named as lotus petal. the theater is actually conducts the kerala art forms daily. it open for the visitors daily from 9.00 am to 7.00 pm.
The building of kerala folklore museum is an example of great carpentry work of kerala, at the entrance there is stone lamp welcomes you to inside the museum. the tradition of travancore, cochi, and malabar joined together here. the entrance fee is 100 for the adults and rupee 50 for the child. the theater performance is usually arranged in 6.30 pm daily. ernakulam south railway station located at a distance of 4 km from here. nedumbassery airport is the closest airport at a distance 35 km from here. buses are easily available from cochi, and choose taxi or rikshaw to reach at the museum.
