Chimmony wildlife sanctuary is located in mukundapuram in thrissur district, it located along with western ghats as the part of thrissur, the chimmony wild life sanctuary was established in 1984. it located at mukundapuram taluk. a dam named chimmony is built across the river chimmony, is about 110 feet height. the head quarters of the sanctuary situated at echippara. trekking is a thrilling experience for the visitors. variety of species, herbs and the wild animals are the specialty of the sanctuary. it is near to peechi vazhani wild life sanctuary. punda park is a part of the sanctuary which is plenty of birds and animals located at the east position of the sanctuary.
The chimmony wildlife sanctuary ranked in one of the 25 sanctuaries in biological hot spot in india, that means the hot spot include the parks which the species facing the danger. the forest area can be classified inti two, one positioned under the moist and another in semi evergreen category. the variety animals included in the park are tiger, leopard, sloth bear, dhole, nilgiri langaur, bonnet macaque, goar, wild boar, malabar giant squirrel etc. the different birds can be seen in the sanctuary are indian pitta, paradise fycatcher, forest owl, sree lankan frogmouth, malabar hornbill etc.
The chimmony wild life sanctuary, coming under the watershed zone of chimmony lake, pindi mudi peak is a part of chimmony wild life sanctuary. the sanctuary is open for the visitors 12 hours daily, 6 am to 6 pm. an indian pay 10 rupee for the entry inside the park but a foreigner must give 100 rupee. during the winter season the temperature become very low, is about 15 degree Celsius. it located 35 km away from thrissur town, cochin international airport located at a distance of 6o0 km. the nearest town is at amballur and the closest railway station is thrissur at a distance of 35 km.
