Agasthyamala, the beautiful picnic spot and a pilgrim center of sage agasthya
Agasthyamala one of the tallest peak located along with western ghats, agasthyakoodam situated near to neyyar wild life sanctuary but a portion of the hill shared with the border of tamilnadu state. its height is 1868 meter. it is 32 km away from neyyar dam and 23 km from bonocaud. the peak is a part of agasthyamala biosphere reserve, the reserve lies in districts of kerala and also the tamilnadu state. thamarabharani and neyyar rivers were originates from this peak give the vegetation for kerala and tamilnadu states.
We can reach the top of agasthyamala only by trekking, the trekking is organized under the department of kerala state. bonocaud is the starting point of trekking, if you are in trekking to the hills, it must be a great experience for you, the trekking is completed as two parts. the first 20 km from bonocaud to forest camp and the next 8 km is from forest camp and finally located at the peak of agasthyarkoodam. it not only a tourist place but also a pilgrimage center for hindu devotees, worshiping agasthya as the deity, it is believed that the name agasthyamala derived from the sage agasthya(one of seven rishies), a statue of the sage installed at the top of the peak. UNESCO added agasthyamala biosphere reserve in the list of world network of biosphere reserves in 2016.
A variety of ayurvedic plants occupies along with agasthya mala, india has a heritage of ayurvedic treatment, may be it would the origin of that medicines. there is limited number of visitors allowed for trekking. the booking can be done in either of the following sites, www.forest.kerala.gov.in OR serviceonline.gov.in. the nearest airport from the location is trivandrum international airport situated at a distance 61 km. the closest railway station located at tamilnadu state ambasamudram in thirunelveli district about 25 km.
