The popular pilgrim destination located at the banks of vembanad lake, this is one of the main shiva temples in kerala. vaikathastami is the colorful festival ever in south kerala, the temple procession is the star attraction belongs to the event, as a shiva temple it celebrates ashtami day in grand manner, the particular day is the janma ashtami of lord krishna, because the temple has an equal place for lord krishna. this is a unique temple in kerala.
The temple administration decided to conduct the annual temple festival as usual in every year. udayanapuram murugan temple has a close relation with here, as per hindu legend lord shiva is the father of muruga. during the procession function in festival days there is an mythological meeting takes place with lord muruga and shiva. the unique feature of the vaikom mahadeva kshethram is worshiping lord shiva in three forms in three different pooja schedules daily. vaikathashtami is the 12th day of the festival, vaikathastami vilakku is the highlight of that day, is a highly valuable ritual on that particular day.
